Yes... believe it or not this is an ear that is beginning
to be separated into small mats.
|
|
This is another angle of the ear with some
identification of each mat we helped form.

Here is an underside view of the ear flap clearly
showing all the little individual mats. If you let the hair go on
the ear, it will turn into one big matted ball making it very difficult
to separate. Pay attention to this portion and the entire other
side of the ear as shown in the first 2 photos above.

Be very careful of this small hidden area located
under the ear canal. The hair needs separated here as well but the
skin is very thin and sensitive. Take note of the small spot of
dark wax just above the ear canal. This is not bad but the inner
ear canal needs to be kept clean. You will eventually notice a
clump of hair growing out of the canal that will eventually cake up with
wax. This hair should be pulled out so the canal doesn't get
infected. It is easily done by grasping the small clump of hair
with a pair of hemostats and pulling. It doesn't hurt them but if
you are not comfortable, have your vet do this.

Another picture of the sensitive skin area under
the ear canal. When you first lift up the ear this skin forms a
flap over itself.

This is how we like to keep the hair groomed on top
of the head..... little to no mats. We separate the mats from
pencil thickness to 1 1/2 fingers wide as you move from the back
of the head to the upper neck.

This is about as long as we let the beard grow on
an adult. Notice how we also keep the hairs from forming any
noticeable mats. As puppies, it can be harder to keep the hair separated
here so do your best to form them into very small mats. Separate them further,
brush and trim as they grow out. By the way, our subject in the
photo is not being held down. We are pulling some hair back so you
can see better. She is sound asleep... zzzzz :)

Although a little messy..., this is good for a
Berg. A clean beard makes everyone happy! |
